When stepping out earlier for a walk the first thing I noticed was the contrast in temperature being outside to what was inside. It felt a bit fresher, a slight breeze and then the warming sunlight coming through.
I noticed a bird hopping along in front of me and heard another chirping from a tree nearby. I wondered who it was chirping to and what it might be saying?
As I walked I quickly became aware of the uneven surfaces and having to adjust my steps to retain my balance. I noticed myself sometimes looking down and then being aware of my posture and straightening myself up once more.
I paid attention to the stillness and quiet that surrounded, every so often being challenged by a car, cyclist or train in the background.
I could feel my body temperature changing as the walk progressed and my breathing too, albeit with my breathing I might play around with this and take longer inhalations or equalise with exhalations or even hold my breath at times.
There was one section of the route where I wondered if I’d actually done it. I knew I had otherwise I wouldn’t have been where I was, but I had been so deep in thought for those minutes and simply moving on autopilot.
It goes to show that whilst at times there can be incredible awareness, at other points almost none.
When you go out, how much attention do you give to yourself and your surroundings. How do you benefit from this time…physically, emotionally, cognitively, spiritually?
Where does your walk lead you?
Mine has led me back to writing my first post here after having a break over the summer and it feels good.
